Microgaming Celebrates Anniversary with Time Capsule

Tia Winter | 08 August 2018

Most people celebrate anniversaries with a bunch of flowers and a bottle of bubbles. Not if you are the crowd over at Microgaming. The Isle of Man-based software provider celebrated its first anniversary in its new, purpose-built headquarters by burying a time capsule.

When the provider built its 5-storey HQ known as Sixty Two, it did so knowing that it and Derivco would expand rapidly. The planned-for expansion has already begun. The staff of 231 that moved in on 31 July last year has since grown to more than 300.

CEO John Coleman said the anniversary was an important occasion that called for celebration. He went on to explain that the time capsule was like a photograph that captured the spirit of the staff, campus, and culture.

Coleman added that the capsule will serve as a reminder of what they had achieved, and it would offer future generations a glimpse into the provider’s history. Paying tribute to those who work at the office, the CEO said they had turned it into something much greater than a workplace, and that they can be proud of what they have achieved thus far.

What’s In the Capsule?

Time capsules are usually containers made from metal or another durable material in which various items are placed as a means of communicating with future generations about the present. Initially, their intended recipients were historians, anthropologists, and archaeologists. So, what’s in the one Coleman buried under the main entrance of Microgaming’s new HQ?

According to him, its contents were suggested by staff, and commemorate various company highlights. Among them were articles and media reports from the past year, including one in which the building was named one of 2017’s coolest offices.

Also put into the metal container were photographs from award ceremonies, the opening of the new HQ, and staff volunteer days, as well as a PlayItForward CSR volunteer t-shirt. The capsule was then vacuum sealed. It was also treated to ensure it suffers as little damage as possible over the coming decades.

Coleman said the intention is to retrieve it and open it in 30 years’ time. The hope is that many, if not all, of the staff who were part of the project will be present to look back on what is a significant period for the provider that started it all.

An Industry Pioneer

Microgaming was founded in 1994, when the digital revolution was just beginning. It became an industry pioneer when it helped launch the world’s first online casino.

Its trailblazing ways continued, and the company not only helped further gaming tech, but the industry itself. The provider was one of those whose involvement was integral to the establishing of eCOGRA, the respected industry watchdog. The award-winning provider’s games continue to be enjoyed by millions of players around the world.
